Education Action Zones were established by the government to raise standards in groups of schools in challenging circumstances across the country.  The Rainbow Education Action Zone in Stoke on Trent was set up in January 2000 with funding from the DfES as well as private sector contributions.

Our mission statement, as stated at the project’s outset still remains,

“Raising achievement and aspirations for all”

Underpinning this are the following broad outcomes:

  • High achieving learners
  • Highly motivated and effective teachers
  • School leavers with high aspirations and improved employability
  • Teachers, students and support staff who are lifelong learners
  • Communities which value education and their local schools

The Zone works with 2 High schools, 13 Primary schools and Kemball school within the Stoke on Trent area.

Across our Zone we encourage local partnerships – schools, parents, the community, businesses and the local authorities – to find innovative solutions to deal with the challenging circumstances our pupils, staff and communities find themselves in.

Due to the funding for this project ending in January 2005, we are in the process of planning the transformation of the Zone into an Excellence in Cities Education Action Zone.  This is to ensure the excellent work of the Zone and its schools is continued beyond the initial 5-year plan.
