The Graduate Teacher Programme suits mature, well qualified people who can think quickly, begin to take on teaching responsibilities and who need to earn a living whilst they train. This employment-based route includes an individual, flexible training plan, which takes into account previous experience, skills and understanding.
How does it work?
Successful applicants will be employees of a Stoke-on-Trent school and will receive a salary. In addition the Stoke-on-Trent Graduate Teacher Programme pay a training grant per term to the school and the HEI for each candidate successfully accepted on to the programme. This grant is to support the implementation of the full training programme. The training programme usually takes one school year.
Where will you do your training?
If you are successful in gaining a place on the Graduate Teacher Programme with Stoke-on-Trent Graduate Teacher Programme you will be placed in one of our lead schools in Stoke-on-Trent. We will allocate the schools you do not need to organise this for yourself. If you are already employed in Stoke-on-Trent this will be evident in your application form and the school will be asked to stipulate if they wish to offer a placement at the school. This will be organised by the Graduate Teacher Programme. In Primary, there is usually only one trainee in each lead school as we have more lead school than trainees.
Successful applicants will be connected to a university, which will be the Institute of Education, Manchester Metropolitan University for secondary graduates and University of Derby or Manchester Metropolitan University for primary graduates. Your assigned university tutor will help you and your mentor to write your training plan and they will visit every half term to ensure that you make satisfactory progress throughout your training year.
The lead school will assign you with a Mentor in Primary and a Professional and Subject Mentor in Secondary.
How long does the GTP take?
You will stay with your lead school for the majority of your placement (usually one-school year). During the year you will spend six weeks at a second school, during the first part of the Spring Term.
