OVERSEAS TRAINED TEACHER PROGRAMME
Anyone wishing to work as a qualified teacher in England must have Qualified Techer Status (QTS). However if you have qualified overseas you can work as an unqualified teacher for up to four years without QTS.
To gain QTS overseas trained teachers need to:-
- Ensure they have the appropriate work permit and visa
- Check all their qualifications, including any teaching qualifications, gained overseas with N.A.R.I.C. or telephone 01242 260010 or 0870 9904 088.
- Secure employment with a school as an unqualified teacher with a school that is able to support them through any training required to undertake the assessment for QTS. This is not a training post and does not attract any funding for schools.
- Apply to a for a place on the Overseas Trained Teacher programme with a OTTP provider who participate on the scheme - Note: Stoke-on-Trent do not at present administer the OTTP.
- Undertake assessment for QTS in line with the regulations set down by the Teacher Development Agency.
Schools wishing to employ overseas trained teachers need to:-
- Satisfy themselves that the teacher has all the necessary work permits and visas (please check with HR).
- Employ any overseas trained teacher as an unqualified teacher and be able to support them through any training required for assessment against QTS standards. (this could involve time out of school, so cover costs could be incurred). This is not a training post and does not attract funding from the Standards Fund. There is a small training grant available but this is paid to the OTTP provider who administers the scheme.
- Identify a participating OTTP provider and support the application for a place by the overseas trained teacher in their employ.
- Be willing to pay for any assessments required up to £500 for QTS Standard and £140 for Induction Standards ( the first assessment is usually paid for by the provider)
